The main issues that concern American citizens before the presidential elections are issues of race, gender and immigration, conclude experts from the Pew Research Center, who published a corresponding study on June 6.
The survey, which was conducted in April, involved 8,709 adults, of whom 7,166 were registered voters. A poll conducted to examine the opinions of registered supporters of Donald Trump and Joe Biden ahead of the 2024 election showed stark divisions between American political parties on some issues.
Therefore, the question of whether it affects legacy of slavery 79% of registered voters who support Biden responded positively to the plight of Black people in modern America. In his opinion, it has long-term consequences. The remaining 20% indicated that slavery had virtually no effect.
On the other hand, 73% of registered voters who support Trump said it had little or no effect. Only 27% of registered voters who support Trump believe that the legacy of slavery has a large or significant impact on Black people in the United States today.
There is also a difference in the question. immigration. Support for Trump supporters “national deportation efforts” of all people illegally in the United States has increased. The majority of Trump supporters (63%) support deporting these people. Among those who intend to vote for Biden, there are 11%.
Biden recently announced an executive action on immigration that closes the southern border when the average number of border crossings between ports of entry exceeds 2,500 per day.
American Voters See Issues Differently gender identity. Nationally, 65% of registered voters believe that so-called gender is determined by the sex a person is assigned at birth. 34% of respondents disagree with them, indicating that gender may differ from sex at birth. However, the attitude towards this issue depends largely on who the respondent supports in the elections. Trump supporters have a clear opinion: 90% of their voters believe that gender is determined by sex at birth. In turn, Biden’s supporters are more ambivalent. Almost 60% believe that gender can be different from sex at birth, while 39% believe the opposite.
There is no unity among American voters on the issue same sex marriage. Overall, Biden supporters believe gay marriage is good for society. Among them, 57% of respondents support them, while among Trump voters only 11% support same-sex marriage. This means that Biden supporters are almost five times more likely to view same-sex marriage as a positive thing than Trump supporters.
Finally, American society is also divided over the issue abortions. Overall, more American citizens have become more supportive of abortion rights since the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. However, there are serious contradictions between Democrats and Republicans in this regard: while 88% of Biden voters support abortion in all or most cases, 38% of Trump supporters support those respondents.
