The popular messenger WhatsApp is potentially vulnerable to hacking, the press service of the department for organizing the fight against illegal use of information and communications technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia reported on June 6.
Department experts note that the mobile application and especially its web version have a low level of security, so even a small error on the part of the user can give attackers access to correspondence and information.
“All you need to do is follow a suspicious link, open a viral video, or log in from a new device for attackers to take over your account.”the message said.
In addition, through this messenger, scammers also try to deceive or blackmail citizens by posing as relatives or representatives of official structures, the department noted.
Users were advised not to click on unknown links, not to respond to messages or calls from dubious accounts, and not to store important information on their mobile device.
“WhatsApp’s vulnerability requires users to be more attentive”concluded the department.
