Democratic majority in the European Parliament annuls agreements with the far right

The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) this Sunday welcomed predictions of a renewed democratic majority in the European Parliament and considered that there was “no need or justification” for reaching agreements with the far right.

“It is already clear that there will still be a democratic majority in the European Parliament (EP), so there is no need or justification for making deals behind closed doors with any part of the anti-worker far right,” the ETUC said. .

According to a statement cited by Spanish news agency EFE, the CES results also demonstrate that the European Union (EU) must address the economic and social insecurity that is fueling “growing anger and fear in society.”

The Confederation warned that people most dissatisfied with pay or working conditions tend to be more likely to vote for the far right.

“All democratic forces now have a responsibility to restore security and hope, create quality jobs and higher living standards, improve public services and a just transition in which workers have a voice and no one is left behind,” he added.

Created in 1973 in Brussels, CES brings together 93 national organizations from 41 countries, including the Portuguese CGTP-IN and UGT.

According to European Parliament projections based on estimates and exit polls, which are currently being updated, the European People’s Party (EPP) won the elections with 186 seats, followed by the Alliance of European Socialists and Democrats (S&D) with 133 MPs. and Liberals of a renewed Europe – 82 seats.

Next are the ultra-conservative Conservatives and Reformists with 70 seats and the far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) party with 60 seats.
