A blood test that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease up to 15 years before symptoms appear could be available free of charge on the UK’s National Health Service later this year. According to the newspaper SunThe test is as accurate as existing diagnostic options, but is cheaper and easier to perform.
This test measures p-tau217 protein levels because it is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and can accumulate up to 15 years before typical symptoms of the disease, such as forgetfulness and cognitive decline, appear.
The researchers are confident that the necessary procedures to make the exam available can be completed within seven months.
“If, as we hope, new treatments become available that can slow down Alzheimer’s disease, blood tests will be vital,” said Jonathan Schott, medical director of Alzheimer’s Research UK.
