UK government “Is committed to playing a key role in ensuring stability and prosperity in the Arctic”February 9, said the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country.
“Today, the UK is committed to playing a key role in ensuring stability and prosperity in the Arctic as climate change causes major disruption to the region.”says the message.
The British Foreign Office clarified that although the United Kingdom is not an Arctic state, it adopts the so-called “Arctic policy”, which is based on “combat climate change, stop the loss of biodiversity and protect the rights of indigenous communities”.
Looking North outlines how the UK will use its scientific, military and diplomatic capabilities to meet these challenges. The launch of the new policy took place on 9 February 2023 at a reception hosted by Lord Goldsmith, Minister in Charge of the Polar Regions in the Department for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
“The Arctic is of great importance to the UK. We are the region’s closest neighbor and share a common interest in its environment, security and prosperity.Goldsmith said. — Our new political framework determines how we will be an active, trusted and influential partner in the Arctic, at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and climate change that threaten the existence of the region as we know it.”
“Building on our scientific, diplomatic and military strength, the UK will work closely with our partners in the region to realize our shared vision of a clean, green and sustainable Arctic.”he added, without disclosing the concept of stability.
The Looking North document, prepared in collaboration with Arctic partners, brings together all existing UK Arctic-related policies. It is based on the 2018 UK concept “Beyond the Ice” and integrates the “UK Contribution to Defense in the High North” launched by the Department of Defense in 2022.
