Iran will not negotiate for the sake of negotiations: Iranian Foreign Ministry

Iran will not negotiate for the sake of negotiations: Iranian Foreign Ministry

As long as negotiations are on the agenda to achieve real and practical goals, Iran will stay on the path of diplomacy, but Tehran does not accept “negotiations for the sake of negotiations.” Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian stated this on February 9, IRNA reports.

According to Abdollahian, the Islamic Republic attaches great importance to diplomacy and negotiations and has not backed away from the nuclear deal negotiations.

“We announce to the White House that they should choose between official messages through diplomatic channels to take the last step to resurrect the 2015 nuclear deal and paradoxical statements through the media.”Amirabdollahian said.

Recall that the United States and Western countries began applying sanctions against Iran after Washington withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018.

Since April 2021, negotiations have been underway in Vienna to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program, also known as the Iran nuclear deal. The agreement was concluded in 2015 between Iran, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia and the United States. Tehran has pledged to reduce its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of Western sanctions.

In 2018, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew Washington from the JCPOA and imposed new sanctions on Iran. For its part, Tehran terminated the agreement and relaunched the development of the nuclear program. After Joe Biden reached the White House, the US decided to return to the deal, which launched months-long negotiations in Vienna over the restoration of the JCPOA.

According to the latest draft nuclear deal proposed by the EU and agreed with Iran, Tehran is obliged to start reducing its nuclear program from the first day after and in case of signing the agreement. For another 120 days from the start of the deal, Iran will have to export 50 million barrels of oil “under the verification mechanism.”

At the moment, the negotiations of the nuclear agreement are frozen. Contacts of all participants in the transaction have ceased.
