A team of archaeologists during excavations in the historical center of Auxerre, France, discovered a cemetery of newborn babies and children over a thousand years old.
Researchers have been conducting research on Marshall Lasherc Square since February this year, ahead of work that will be carried out in the area.

In the 4th century the city was surrounded by new fortifications. Under these walls there was a cemetery (or necropolis).
Previously, necropolises were located outside cities. Around the periphery of these burials, places may have been reserved for very young children (stillborns and people only a few months old), since the mortality rate was much higher at that time.
The excavations carried out at Auxerre explore one such specific area. The very good preservation gives archaeologists the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of this stage of history.
Broken ceramic dishes were found near the graves. This was left by family members to protect the deceased.
