A 41-year-old Moroccan set himself on fire in front of the Moroccan consulate general in Madrid on February 7, AFP reported.
The man was seriously injured and was transferred to a hospital in La Paz to receive the necessary medical attention.
Spanish outlet El País reported that a Moroccan consular officer managed to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. Minutes later the emergency services arrived to stabilize his condition and transfer the man to the hospital.
The Moroccan consulate has no information on the circumstances of the incident and what led the 41-year-old to set himself on fire.
“A man set himself on fire near the consulate. We have no idea why he did it. He happened very quickly.” a Moroccan diplomatic source told AFP.
According to El País, the man suffered burns on more than 30% of his body.
