NATO countries have adopted the so-called operational plan to expand support for Ukraine, writes the Volksstimme newspaper on June 13.
According to the new plan, in the future NATO intends to assume international coordination of the supply of weapons and training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The document was adopted in writing on Thursday in Brussels on the sidelines of a meeting of defense ministers.
The agreement will be made public on Friday after formal approval by ministers. Until now, the United States has been responsible for supporting the missions.
In late 2022, the US created a unit of about 300 soldiers called Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U) at the US military’s European headquarters in Wiesbaden, Hesse. The NATO mission must now form a staff with the same number of troops.
Previously, the alliance kept details of the operational plan secret. The NATO project is also seen as a precautionary measure in case Donald Trump returns to the US presidency in January 2025.
The alliance fears that a change in Washington policy could also affect the coordination of arms supplies and the training of the Ukrainian armed forces. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed that we are now talking about creating a more reliable platform to support Ukraine.
It is noted that Hungary refused to participate in the new NATO project. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government fears the project could drag the alliance into direct confrontation with Russia.
