Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this Thursday that his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping assured him that Beijing would not sell weapons to Russia, a recognized ally of China.
“I had a telephone conversation with the leader of China, who told me that he would not sell weapons to Russia. We’ll see. He gave me his word,” Zelensky said on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy.
Zelensky also said that the ten-year bilateral security agreement between the United States and Ukraine, signed this Thursday on the sidelines of the summit, “opens the way to Ukraine’s integration into NATO.”
The President of Ukraine, speaking at a joint press conference with his American counterpart Joe Biden, added that the agreement “stipulates that the United States supports the future integration of Ukraine into NATO.”
The G7 unites the seven most industrialized countries in the world (Germany, Canada, USA, France, Italy, Japan and the UK) and the representative office of the European Union.
This Thursday, on the first of three days of the summit in Italy, the G7 pledged $50 billion (€46.3 billion) in support for Ukraine, which will be financed by interest on frozen Russian assets.
According to the head of the Ukrainian state, the money will be used to arm new brigades formed to help soldiers at the front.
Ukraine and Russia have been at war since February 2022, after Russian troops invaded Ukrainian territory.
