One of 17-year-old Kayla Blythe’s lungs collapsed after she smoked 400 cigarettes in a week. Since 2015, the young woman smoked electronic cigarettes because she thought they were harmless, but she was wrong. An air bubble, known as a pulmonary vesicle, developed in one of Kayla’s lungs and eventually burst. Mirror.
The young British woman’s health deteriorated on May 11, the day she was rushed to hospital and underwent a five-hour operation to remove part of her lung. She was hospitalized for two weeks.
“She was at a friend’s house and I got a call at 4am saying she had passed out and turned blue. I followed her. We took her to the hospital. This time her lung collapsed due to the hole. They installed drainage. He almost went into cardiac arrest,” his father said.
Kayla’s health problems began in November 2023 and she was first admitted to hospital with a suspected heart attack. It was with the help of X-rays that doctors realized that the teenager had a bubble in his lung. In February 2024, Kayla was told that she was already healthy, but in fact she was not.
“When I was 15, it became popular. All my friends did this. I thought it was harmless and I would be fine. Every day I used 4000 vapes and finished them off in a week. Honestly, I thought they were harmless and wouldn’t hurt anyone, even though I’ve seen so many things about it. It seems to me that everyone has the same opinion. But now I don’t touch them. I don’t go near them. The situation scared me very much. I was terrified,” the young woman explained.
Kayla’s father warns on social media about the dangers of e-cigarettes. Mark Blythe also smoked e-cigarettes for 13 years but had no health problems.
“I would tell parents that if you see your child do this, you will go through what I went through. It’s not worth it. Children understand only when it happens to them. That’s why I posted on my Facebook. I’m going to raise awareness among young people on this issue,” the father says.
