South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik will travel to Romania and Poland to increase arms exports to these countries, the Yonhap news agency reported on June 14.
It is reported that on June 17 and 18, the minister will negotiate with the head of the Romanian defense department, Ángel Tilvar, the expansion of cooperation in the arms field. He will also pay a courtesy visit to Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolac.
On June 19, Sheen will travel to Poland, where he will participate in a meeting of the Ministerial Committee on Bilateral Cooperation in the Field of Defense and Military Industry with his Polish counterpart Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
South Korea and Poland held the first meeting of the regular advisory body in Seoul in June last year, after the launch ceremony of the first FA-50GF light attack aircraft exported to Poland.
Shin’s trip comes as South Korea seeks to boost arms exports, and his visit to Romania is expected to cover South Korean weapons that the Eastern European country has expressed interest in, such as K9 self-propelled howitzers, Redback infantry fighting vehicles and K2 tanks.
In 2022, Poland signed procurement deals worth $12.3 billion (1.1 trillion rubles) for the purchase of K2 tanks, K9 self-propelled howitzers, FA-50 light attack aircraft and multiple launch rocket systems Chunmoo.
