The President of Cape Verde has invited Pope Francis to visit the archipelago this Friday during the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the Diocese of Santiago, he said in a message after meeting with the head of the Catholic Church in the Vatican.
“I have repeated the invitation to you to visit the islands as part of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the creation of the Diocese of Santiago de Cape Verde,” wrote José Maria Neves.
The celebrations will last until 2033.
On the other hand, as he noted on Thursday, the head of state noted “the desire for the beatification of Manuel Costa Rios, better known as the black Manuel, who in the 17th century left Cape Verde for Argentina and became the custodian of the sanctuary in the city of Luján.”
The President of Cape Verde described this Friday’s meeting with Pope Francis in a post on Facebook.
“It was a brilliant meeting. First of all, we talked about peace and brotherhood throughout the world, freedom of spirit and the dignity of the human person. The Holy Father mentioned Cape Verde to me with a mixture of emotion, pride and deep respect.” , he described.
Pope Francis “has been an inspiring leader and has dealt with the most pressing challenges of our time, such as geostrategic wars, climate change, poverty, inequality and migration, with great wisdom and generosity,” he added.
José Maria Neves was received “exactly 10 years after” the last meeting between them, also at the Vatican, as Prime Minister for the exchange of documents ratifying the Legal Agreement signed between Cape Verde and the Holy See, in June 2013.
This Friday’s meeting was part of the head of state’s visit to Italy, which will last until Monday.
The head of state’s agenda also includes other meetings related to bilateral cooperation, as well as visits to Cape Verdean communities in Rome and Naples.
