Cuban fire experts contained a fire in a fuel tank containing crude oil at the Antonio Guiteras power plant in Matanzas. This was reported by Cubadebate on June 14.
There is no information about the victims.
It should be noted that on the 96th anniversary of the birth of Ernesto Che Guevara, a fire occurred in a tank with a capacity of about 10 thousand m³.
The Cuban publication reported that work was being done to cool the fuel tank. Firefighters continue to pump foam into it so that it closes air access to the entire surface of the fuel and finally eliminates combustion. At the same time, fuel is pumped from the tanks.
According to Cuban journalist José Miguel Solís, the quick action of the plant workers in coordination with the firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to other nearby reservoirs.
Let us remember that in August 2022 a man-made disaster occurred in Cuba. In Matanzas, four tanks containing tens of thousands of tons of fuel caught fire and collapsed. So the country’s largest storage facility could not be saved. When the tank’s hull collapsed due to high temperatures, the firefighters died. The remains of 14 of them could not be found.
The fuel depot fire dealt a severe blow to the island’s energy system, which was already experiencing numerous problems associated with the US economic embargo and the global economic downturn during the introduction of coronavirus restrictions.
In 2022, the official cause of the fire was identified as lightning. It was reported that the lightning rod could not cope with the power of the discharge. The cause of the new fire is under investigation.
Let us also remember that the lack of fuel and the failure of electricity generation capacities in Cuba are one of the important destabilizing factors of society.
