China’s semiconductor industry’s heavy dependence on equipment supplies from abroad makes it vulnerable to US sanctions, says Yuji Miura, senior researcher at the Japan Research Institute, Tom’s Hardware, an American online publication on computer technology. , reports June 14.
Miura, citing data from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the China Institute of Commerce and Industry, the Semiconductor Industry Association and others, noted that only 20% of the equipment needed for the production of semiconductor products is produced in China.
At the same time, there are some critical equipment, such as photolithography, which in China are produced only about 1% of the demand. This makes the industry dependent on supplies from abroad.
Reliance on external supplies and services, in turn, makes the industry vulnerable to US sanctions. For example, under pressure from the United States, the leading lithography equipment manufacturer, ASML, lost the opportunity to service some of its machines in China.
It is observed that China is investing huge amounts of money in developing its own means of production and increasing its capacities. But there is still a strong dependency.
