The decision on the presence of NATO troops and command in Finland was approved by all alliance members, the country’s Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen reported on June 15, Finnish publication Iltalehti reported.
At the NATO summit in Brussels, Häkkänen stated that all NATO countries supported Finland’s integration into the alliance. “Finland will receive the NATO headquarters, Finland will have a ground force presence and all northern European countries have been accepted under the control of Norfolk (Joint Operations Command in Norfolk, USA – approx. IA KV)” said the minister. .
He also said that the headquarters of NATO ground forces in Finland would be located in Mikkeli, in the east of the country.
Earlier, Iltalzeit newspaper reported that Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said that a joint command center of Poland, Germany and Sweden would be created to coordinate actions in the Baltic Sea.
