The inhabitants of the German city of Limburg an der Lahn (federated state of Hesse, Germany) decided to take radical measures to reduce the pigeon population, reports the Berlin Telegraph.
The inhabitants of the city began to complain en masse to the city administration about the increase in the number of birds. People report that pigeons contaminate public spaces, outdoor areas of restaurants, and balconies.
At the same time, more than half of the population (53%) supported the administration’s decision to destroy the pigeons.
There are about 700 pigeons in the city. The city authorities plan to use a rather cruel method in which the falconer will lure the pigeons into a trap, then stun them and break their necks.
This story sparked widespread public outcry and criticism from animal rights activists and environmental organizations in Germany. They express serious concerns about the humanity of the methods chosen. Representatives of animal protection organizations claim that killing birds in this way is an extremely cruel and inhumane decision, the publication notes.
