The man was placed in preventive detention because he was “seriously accused” of committing several crimes against property in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, PSP reported this Saturday.
According to the Regional Directorate of the Public Security Police (PSP) of the Azores, the suspect was arrested at the scene of the crime by officers from the Maia police station of the Ponta Delgada police department.
The 23-year-old man is suspected of “several property crimes reported in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, with greater frequency in the parish of Lomba da Maya and neighboring parishes.”
“This man, well known to the police because he has made theft a way of life, has also caused great social anxiety among the residents of the mentioned parishes,” the PSP said in a statement.
The most serious measure of coercion was applied to the detainee – preventive detention, after appearing for the first judicial interrogation.
The Regional Command of the Azores highlights “the effective and efficient intervention carried out by the PSP criminal investigation, since the security threat that the accused posed in several parishes of the municipality of Ribeira Grande has ceased, guaranteeing the protection of the local population and tourists who will visit the Autonomous Region of the Azores.”
