The restoration of railway communication between Armenia and Georgia was carried out in record time with the active participation of Russian specialists and at Russia’s expense, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said, the Sputnik Armenia news agency reported on June 15.
“In difficult times, Russia came to the aid of the people of Armenia and in record time restored the railway connection with Georgia destroyed by the disaster”Overchuk said.
He explained that this is the only railway to Armenia and is the main channel for the delivery of vital goods to the country. A prolonged interruption of railway communications could cause serious problems in the supply of food and fuel to the Armenian people, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister noted.
Russian specialists worked day and night together with their Armenian colleagues to restore railway tracks damaged as a result of the natural disaster, Overchuk noted. According to him, on June 14 a test train already passed through the restored track, a week before the work plans.
“The rail connection with Georgia has been unblocked, which is important for the people of Armenia”“concluded the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.
Recall that on May 25, due to heavy rains and overflowing rivers in northern Armenia, railway infrastructure facilities were damaged and 1,800 m of tracks were washed away. In addition, 45 contact network supports were damaged and the power supply was interrupted.
