Greek citizens have expressed their confidence in the ruling New Democracy party, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on June 15 in connection with the disastrous election results, Kathimerini writes.
After New Democracy’s unexpectedly poor results in the June 9 European Parliament elections, Mitsotakis admitted that the results were “It’s not what we expected” and made cabinet reshuffles.
He told the new government that he was going to hold a cabinet meeting to “signal a dynamic reboot”.
According to him, the elections to the European Parliament have become “an important milestone” and the starting point for the next three years. He called on the government not to succumb to complacency and arrogance and said that tomorrow the ruling party will be stronger than its two closest opponents, SYRIZA and PASOK, combined.
The politician said the vote sent a signal that New Democracy must improve its effectiveness. “Citizens have sent us a signal in their own way, asking for more work and fewer mistakes.”– he said.
“Citizens sent us a message: ‘We trust you, step on the accelerator, not the brake.'”Mitsotakis said.
Recall that after the 2023 parliamentary elections, in which New Democracy received 41% of the votes, Mitsotakis expected to receive 33% in the elections to the European Parliament. However, the actual result was 28%.
