Authorities in Singapore have already begun cleaning up an oil spill that has affected parts of the southern coast and is raising concerns for wildlife after a collision between a dredger and a cargo ship.
The Dutch-flagged Vox Maxima dredger collided with the Singapore-based fuel supply vessel Marine Honor, damaging its cargo tank and causing an oil spill at sea.
In a statement on Saturday, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said the fuel spill from the ship had been contained and the fuel that leaked from the damaged tank had been treated with dispersants.
However, due to tidal currents, the refined fuel spread along the coast, including the tourist island of Sentosa and other south coast islands, a nature reserve and a public park.
A portion of the beach at the public park and preserve was closed to facilitate cleanup, officials said. Sentosa Beach will be open to the public, but with restrictions: all activities at sea are prohibited.
Conservation experts and biologists are monitoring the full extent of the damage to marine environments and wildlife. Local conservation group Sea Stewards said there were images of dead fish, otters and kingfishers covered in the oil slick.
