A prisoner injured three prison guards at the Antwerp detention center, one of whom suffered a serious head injury, The Brussels Times reported on June 16.
The inmate reportedly became aggressive while distributing food. The prisoner reportedly refused to go to the hospital dressed in prison clothes and demanded to be taken in civilian clothes, ACV unionist Bjorn Achten told VRT NWS.
“Shortly afterwards, while delivering food, he tried to hit a colleague with an iron coffee pot. Other prisoners managed to snatch the jar from his hands in time, after which the man overturned the cart on which the lunch was placed. Then the jailers closed the cell door,” said Bjorn Achten, an ACV union member.
The task force and a correctional officer arrived at the scene to transfer the detainee to the punishment cell, but the inmate resisted the staff.
A jailer suffered a slash wound and was taken to hospital for treatment. The prison service said two other members of the intervention group were also injured. Meanwhile, the detainee was placed in solitary confinement, where he will remain for the moment.
