Republicans in the House of Representatives this Thursday submitted the first formal document requests from Hunter and James Biden about their business outside the US, further stoking the investigation into the president’s family.
Congressman James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, sent letters to Joe Biden’s son Hunter, the president’s brother James, and his former business manager.
The Republicans intend to collect documents and messages related to businesses outside the United States, “with individuals who have been associated with the Chinese Communist Party.”
“If President Biden is compromised by agreements with foreign adversaries and they influence his decision-making, this poses a threat to national security,” Comer said in a statement.
These letters are the latest Republican action in the investigation into the Biden family, accused of “influence peddling”, although no evidence has yet been collected to support the allegations, reports the Associated Press (AP).
The requests include any “secret” records and reports of travel and financial activities between the president or James Biden and his wife Sarah Jones Biden and Hunter Biden since January 20, 2009.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer dismissed the request as Comer’s attempt to sell his “inaccurate and unsubstantiated findings masquerading as real research.”
“Because your letter is a comprehensive attempt to collect a wide range of documents and communications from President Biden and his family, I am writing to explain that the Oversight and Accountability Committee does not have a legitimate legislative purpose and oversight basis for requesting such records. , Biden, who is a private individual,” attorney Abby Lowell said in her response letter to the committee.
Shortly after they took control of the House of Representatives, the Republicans, led by Comer and Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio, launched a series of wide-ranging investigations into the president’s family, sending requests for documents to almost every government agency.
Last month, Comer used the Republicans’ new power in the lower house to ask the Treasury Department for information about financial transactions by members of the Biden family that were flagged as suspicious activity.
These reports are routine, with large financial transactions automatically flagged by the government and are not in themselves evidence of wrongdoing.
A few weeks later, a Kentucky Republican asked to be transcribed an interview with Georges Berger, an art dealer who has been showing Hunter Biden’s work in galleries in New York and Los Angeles since 2021.
Comer requested a link between the gallery and the White House, citing Republican concerns that the younger Biden was doing business on his father’s behalf.
As early as Wednesday, former Twitter executives testified before Congress about the company’s decision to initially block an October 2020 New York Post article on the platform about the contents of a laptop owned by Hunter Biden.
In tense, hours-long hearings, former officials admitted that Twitter made a mistake by blocking an article about Joe Biden’s son, who was running in the 2020 presidential election at the time, but vehemently denied Republicans’ accusations that they were being pressured. Democrats and law enforcement to suppress history.
