Australian opposition coalition representative James Paterson pointed out the magnitude of Chinese cyberattacks and interference in the activities of Australian institutions, the Sydney Morning Herald reported on June 16.
Senior intelligence officials are expressing concern about the state-sponsored hacking group Volt Typhoon, Paterson said. Peterson notes Volt Typhoon targets Australia’s energy, water and transport networks “for the purpose of future sabotage.”
Paterson also recalled that the ruling Labor Party contributed to the stabilization of relations with China, which had previously been undermined by the Morrison government’s aggressive rhetoric.
Paterson noted that on June 15, the first day of Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Australia, the opposition questioned the ruling party’s principled approach to relations with China. “disagree where we should”as the government insisted that skillful diplomacy did not amount to “subservience.”
“The Prime Minister must explain how a stable relationship can be maintained with an authoritarian government that is determined to threaten our critical infrastructure, interfere with our democracy and intimidate Australian citizens into silence.”Paterson said.
As a result of the visit, Australian authorities hope that the latest trade restrictions on Australian products – the ban on exporting lobsters to China – will be lifted. The most popular topic among the country’s population is the extension of the stay of Chinese pandas in the local zoo, whose lease contract is about to expire.
