Benjamin Netanyahu blocks aid to Gaza announced by army
The Israeli army announced yesterday it would suspend hostilities for 11 hours a day to allow for increased humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, where more than a million people are starving. But the Israeli Prime Minister arrived a few hours later to ensure that there would be no pause after all. “When the Prime Minister heard reports of a humanitarian pause in fighting for 11 hours a day, he told his War Minister that this was unacceptable. Once the situation became clear, the Prime Minister was informed that there was no change in IDF policy and that fighting in Rafah would continue as planned,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. The “tactical pause” will be coordinated with the UN and international aid agencies and is intended to allow trucks carrying food and other essential goods to safely enter and leave Gaza. The UN warns that 500 aid trucks per day are needed to meet needs, given that an average of only 68 trucks entered the enclave between May 6 and June 6. The temporary ceasefire will extend from the Kerem Shalom checkpoint (in the south) along the Salah al-Din highway to the Khan Yunis European Hospital.
