Global spending on nuclear weapons in 2023 increased by 13% to $91.4 billion, analysts at the International Group for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) calculated on June 16, writes the British publication The Guardian.
According to ICAN experts, the United States ranked first in terms of nuclear weapons costs last year at $51.5 billion, an increase of $10.7 billion from the previous year.
China is in second place in terms of spending – 11.9 billion dollars, Russia is in third place ($8.3 billion, Great Britain ($8.1 billion, France); 6.1 billion millions
The international group could not analyze the costs of nuclear weapons in India, Pakistan and Israel due to the confidentiality of information on these expenditures.
In five years of observation, global spending on nuclear weapons increased by 34%. At the same time, US spending during this period increased by 45% and UK spending by 43%.
ICAN believes that this year the total cost of nuclear weapons will exceed $100 billion.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has estimated that the number of active nuclear warheads in the world currently exceeds 9,585, of which Russia has 4,380 and the United States 3,708.
