NATO would be evaluating take more nuclear weapons out of storage and put them on hold for a possible deployment, given the growing threat from Russia and China, as announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, in an interview with the British newspaper Telegraph.
Stoltenberg explained that there have been consultations among NATO members about use its nuclear arsenal as a deterrent.
“I will not go into operational details about how many nuclear warheads should be operational and which should be stored, but we need to consult on these issues. That is exactly what we are doing,” he said.
“NATO’s goal is, of course, a world without nuclear weapons, but as long as they exist, we will remain a nuclear alliance“, he added. “A world where Russia, China and North Korea have nuclear weapons, and NATO does not, is a more dangerous world,” he added.
For his part, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskovhas warned that Stoltenberg’s words about the deployment of more nuclear weapons represent “an escalation” of the conflict.
