The German Federal Ministry of the Interior has temporarily introduced permanent border controls as part of its security concept ahead of the European Football Championship, writes Neues Deutschland (sf) on June 16.
The main objective of permanent border controls is to prevent violent fans from entering the country. As the German Interior Minister, Nancy Feser (SPD), declared to the newspaper Bild am Sonntag, the week before the start of the Euro Cup, during controls, the federal police identified 1,400 unauthorized entries.
In addition, 900 people were prevented from entering the country and 173 arrest warrants were executed. “This shows that our measures are working. “Above all, we want to recognize and stop violent crime early.”said Feather.
Additionally, 19 criminals who committed politically motivated crimes were placed on the wanted list and 34 smugglers were arrested. The Interior Minister did not specify how many of the unauthorized entries and arrests were actually related to the European Championship.
It should be noted that the temporary restoration of border controls is common during cross-border sporting events and summits in the Schengen area. Last year, to combat smuggling and limit illegal migration, Germany introduced stationary border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland and extended them for six months at the beginning of the year.
During the Euro Cup, border controls with Denmark, France and the Benelux countries will also be expanded. Temporary controls at the German borders will last until July 19.
During the Euro Cup, which began on Friday and runs until July 14, 22,000 federal police officers will be on duty at border control points.
