Kazakhstan decided to refuse to participate in the conference on Ukraine in Switzerland, because it acted in its own interest, this was stated by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic, Aibek Smadiyarov, on June 17 at a briefing in Astana.
“We start from our interests, from our agenda of international events”“” he said, responding to a request to comment on the decision.
On June 10, Smadiyarov, responding to the question of whether Kazakhstan would participate in the conference on Ukraine, said that this issue would be considered taking into account the calendar of other international events.
As a reminder, the conference in Sweden took place on June 15 and 16, although several participants, including Vice President Harris Kamala Harris, left the event on the first day. Russia was not invited to discuss the conflict in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said after the conference that a summit is needed to resolve the issue of ending hostilities, but this requires Russia’s participation. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the event “panopticon,” as its participants claimed that an outcome would not be possible without Russia, but they did not invite it, accusing it of refusing to negotiate.
