The President of the Republic this Monday called for the creation of a strong transatlantic alliance regarding the wars in the Gaza Strip and in Ukraine, without double standards in terms of international law and seeking to involve China in both solutions.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke about these two conflicts during a speech in English at the Portuguese American Foundation for Development (FLAD) in Lisbon before Portuguese American politicians were elected to the legislative chambers of the United States of America.
The head of state noted that we see “a transatlantic relationship working with cohesion in Ukraine, but with difficulties in the Gaza Strip” and “Russia and China are more united than ever, although in different ways: the position of one is stronger than the other ” , which is not necessarily in the interests of the West.”
“So we need to look at these conflicts more holistically, avoiding double standards in international law, involving China in both solutions, keeping the transatlantic alliance very strong – very, very strong – and reducing Russian power in Ukraine. and the Middle East,” he said.
According to the President of the Republic, “this is a guarantee of any advantage in future negotiations that could bring peace and security to Europe and the Middle East.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza further commented on the North American presidential election on November 5 this year: “We feel that we are all fighting the same campaign around the world, an existential American campaign.”
“For Europe, it is abundantly clear what is at stake: the continuation of a strong transatlantic relationship based on dialogue, mutual respect and strategic convergence, or deep immersion in a hyper-polarized country, a transactional attitude towards every ally or competitor, with zero multilateral commitment or any sane meaning in relation to conflicts and disputes around the world,” he said.
In his opinion, the outcome is unpredictable, and “not only the economy explains or will explain the results,” especially because “the economy is performing better than expected, unemployment is historically low, new jobs are historically high, inflation is low.” control, as is the price of energy.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Souza highlighted “the social, cultural and political atmosphere, the creation of all types of theories, hatred and fear as sources of mobilization of people”, the media and social networks, as well as the current level of disinformation, as determining factors for the outcome of this election.
In this context, the President of the Republic entrusted elected legislators with “a special responsibility to counter these risks, reduce disinformation” and “improve the conditions and quality of public debate”, “to save democratic countries from those who might want to turn them into an autocratic hybrid regime.”
