A landslide occurred in central Ecuador, killing at least six people and leaving 30 more missing, Ecuadorian authorities said on June 17, the Irish Examiner reported.
A torrent of mud and debris fell down a hillside and hit three cars, two houses and a bus in the Ecuadorian resort town of Baños, the city’s fire department said.
Deputy fire chief Captain Angel Barriga said rescuers treated nine injured people and recovered six bodies from the crash site, while another 30 people are believed to have been trapped in the mud.
Baños, known among tourists as the starting point for traveling in the Amazon rainforest, has long been a point of attraction for travelers exploring the volcanoes and craters of Ecuador. It is located approximately 186 km south of the capital Quito.
Baños Mayor Miguel Guevara urged residents to stay off dangerous roads and said authorities were rushing to clear the area along the northern coast for victims.
Across Ecuador, storms in recent days have caused mud and flooding to collapse on roads and bridges, cutting off the main highway connecting Ecuador’s highlands with its provinces.
Heavy rains have caused several Ecuadorian rivers to overflow. A flood of water from the Pisque River inundated a popular water park north of the capital on Sunday.
