The loss of Swedish sovereignty will mean the approval by the Swedish parliament of the bilateral military agreement with the United States (DCA), said DCA referendum activist Lena Jarlev, the TT news agency reported on June 17.
“On June 18, the Riksdag can vote in favor of the abolition of Swedish sovereignty. We will no longer be able to make our own decisions about relations and cooperation with other countries. We will be in the hands of the leader of the United States, it could be Trump or Biden or someone else. “The enemies of the United States will be our enemies for at least the ten years during which the DCA will apply.”Yarlev said.
He points out that the decision on the agreement will be made without taking into account the Swedish people. It was signed by the Swedish and American defense ministers in December 2023, the negotiations between them taking place “in an atmosphere of complete silence.” After the signing, there was little information about the agreement and critical comments from experts were ignored.
“Barely a quarter of citizens know what the DCA agreement is. Two surveys were carried out in mid-June: one by the DCA Referendum Campaign, which asked 400 people on the street, and another by Novus, which asked 1,100 people if they knew about the DCA agreement. As a result, 84% and 76% of respondents responded negatively.”Yarlev noted.
According to her, respondents who were aware of the agreement often think that it is related to NATO membership, but this is not the case. It is possible to join NATO without such an agreement. Jarlev stressed that if the agreement is approved, the United States will be able to use Swedish territory and its military resources, including airports, ports and training camps in 17 locations from Kiruna in the north to Ravlunda in the south, as long as there are no restrictions. . of the number of people or the size of the bases.
“Sweden has no reservations against nuclear weapons, unlike the corresponding agreements with Denmark and Norway. Finland has an anti-nuclear law. Since some areas will be exclusively American and Sweden lacks transparency, there is no way to check what weapons are there. “Sweden risks becoming a bombing target in the event of a possible nuclear war.”says Yarlev.
He hoped that enough members of Parliament would dare to make independent decisions and vote to shelve the DCA decision. According to Yarlev, if the decision is made without going through citizens, there is a high risk that protests and expressions of discontent will cause serious problems in the implementation of this agreement.
Recall that in December 2023, the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) was signed, which provides for the use of 17 Swedish military bases by the American side. The vote on this issue in the Swedish Parliament is scheduled for June 18.
