The second agent of the Battalion of Special Police Operations (BOPE) died on Sunday evening, he was shot last Tuesday, the 11th, during an operation in the Mare favela, in the northern zone of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Sergeant Rafael Woflgramm Diaz, 37, was hospitalized in serious condition at the Bonsucesso Federal Hospital in the capital Rio de Janeiro and underwent surgery but did not survive his injuries.
Rafael was shot dead that day during a violent confrontation with drug traffickers from the Comando Vermelho crime gang as police entered the favela. The criminals set up barricades of furniture, fuel drums and other items, which they set on fire when police arrived, and when agents began clearing obstacles to try to advance, they were surprised by a hail of gunfire.
Another BOPE sergeant, Rafael’s colleague, Jorge Galdino da Cruz, was also shot at the same moment and died on the way to the hospital. In addition to these two killed by the police, two suspected drug dealers from Comando Vermelho were also killed in the shootout, both allegedly bodyguards of a drug trafficker in the Mara, a criminal known as Zequinha, who sacrificed himself so that the boss could escape. .
