Budapest opposed the appointment of Ursula von der Leyen to the position of head of the European Commission, the European publication Politico reported on June 18.
Hungarian EU Affairs Minister Janos Boku stated that his country is not against the proposed candidates, except one. At the same time, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has not yet decided which faction to join in the European Parliament.
“Boka said Hungary would not support von der Leyen’s re-election as commission president, but was not against the remaining names on the list of candidates for top positions.”he wrote in the post.
Recall that the former leader is competing for the position of head of the European Commission, which represents the executive branch of the EU. At the beginning of the European Parliament elections, Ursula von der Leyen’s party took a leading role.
EU leaders reportedly “generally agree” with the proposed candidates. The post of head of the European Parliament may fall to the former Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, who should preside over the European Council, and the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, is suitable for the post of head of European diplomacy.
