The Socialist Party has offered its Secretary General Pedro Nuno Santos and party President Carlos Cesar two of the five seats to be assigned by parliament for the Council of State, a Socialist source told Lusa on Tuesday.
Elections for the five members who will be appointed by the Assembly of the Republic to the Council of State, the political advisory body of the President of the Republic, are scheduled for Wednesday, with votes counted using the Hondt method.
Therefore, according to a parliamentary source, in addition to the two names of the PS, two candidates from the SDP parliamentary group and one from Chega should be selected. These candidates are included in a single list, taking into account the representation of each bench.
In the previous legislature, five representatives proposed by the PS and PSD were elected on a joint list (Manuel Alegre, Carlos Cesar, Sampaio da Novoa, Francisco Pinto Balseman and Miguel Cadille), while Chega presented an alternative list but failed to elect anyone. .
If the agreement were now repeated with the participation of only the PS and SDP, Chega on his own list would still be able to elect one of the five names to the State Council with a high probability, since it currently includes more than one-fifth of the deputies.
According to the constitution, the Council of State is composed of “five citizens elected by the Assembly of the Republic in accordance with the principle of proportional representation for a period corresponding to the duration of the legislative body.”
