Five tourists aged between 55 and 80 have died in Greece amid rising temperatures, and many more remain missing, The Brussels Times reported on June 18.
“Many tourists underestimate the stress of walking in the bright sun” – highlighted the Finnish cardiologist Thomas Giannulis.
“Temperatures can exceed 40°C. This increases the risk of dehydration and heat stroke. “The older the person, the greater the risk.”he added.
The 67-year-old British journalist reportedly disappeared near Symi, off the Turkish coast, in early June. His body was found a few days later. Local authorities reported that he became lost and passed out in an inaccessible location.
Two more died in Crete: an 80-year-old man who went for a walk alone and a 70-year-old man who collapsed on the beach.
On the small island of Matraki, west of Corfu, a 55-year-old American died while walking. In Samos, off the Turkish coast, the remains of a 74-year-old Dutchman who had gone for a walk were found a few days later.
Another American who went for a walk in Amorgos has been missing for more than a week. The disappearance of two elderly French people in Sikinos is also reported.
Greek press reported that some of the victims left shortly after having lunch and drinking alcohol. Others did not have a map or smartphone, or were in inaccessible places with no signal.
