The State Office of Health and Welfare of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reported that for the first time this year a Vibrio infection was recorded in the Baltic Sea, Focus Online magazine writes on June 19.
The dangerous germ enters the body through open wounds and can cause serious or even fatal infections. Authorities warn tourists about the danger.
After cases of Vibrio infection were reported in the Baltic Sea in the summer of 2023, the State Office of Health and Social Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LAGuS) confirmed the first case of infection this year.
A 55-year-old woman from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reportedly contracted the germ while walking on the beach. Polluted seawater from the Baltic Sea entered her body through an open wound.
According to LAGuS, the infection was quickly detected. The woman was treated on an outpatient basis. In 2023, a total of five cases of infection with this microbe were recorded in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, one of which was fatal.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, older people with weakened immune systems, people with chronic diseases and cancer patients are at particular risk. Bacteria can also enter the body through foods, such as undercooked fish, mussels, or crabs.
As the results of laboratory studies commissioned by LAGuS show, increased numbers of vibrios can be expected in the Baltic Sea and bottom waters until the end of this year’s swimming season.
