The President of the Order of Doctors said this Wednesday that he has already asked for a quick solution to fill the void left by the dismissal of the board of directors of the local health department of Viseu-Dao-Lafonce (ULSVDL).
“There is now a void, a retiring board of directors, and I have already asked the executive management of SNS to quickly find a solution so that we do not maintain this period of void,” Carlos Cortes said.
The President spoke to reporters late Wednesday morning in Viseu after meeting with the outgoing board of directors and service directors of the ULSVDL, as well as the coordinators of the primary health care units.
“Leadership is needed, organization is needed, coordination is needed, which is not sympathetic to this situation, which at the moment is a huge mess,” he added.
The ULSVDL Board of Directors sent a letter of resignation to the Minister of Health on June 13 because she realized that she was “no longer fit to continue fulfilling her mandate,” a day after Ana Paula Martins told the Assembly of the Republic that health leadership was weak.
“Due to the lack of confidence expressed in our performance as leaders and managers, we submit our resignation to Your Excellency,” the administration wrote in a letter addressed to Ana Paula Martins.
“I will not comment on the minister’s words, but I can say that I found two important aspects in the hospital: a great lack of human resources in all services, but the dedication and commitment of the professionals that allow many of these difficulties to be overcome,” said Carlos Cortes.
After the meetings, the chairman made it a point to leave “a very strong compliment” to the professionals of ULS Viseu Dão-Lafões, who “persisted despite these difficulties, perhaps in a way that many other hospitals in the country did not.” .
In this sense, he presented a list of positive aspects of the ULS Viseu Dão Lafões, such as, among others, “gynecology and obstetrics, which have no shortcomings,” “no waiting list for cancer patients,” and internal medicine, “with a lot of difficulty, but holding up.”
“I want to leave a message of trust, a message of calm, in which ULS Viseu Dão Lafões is able to give an adequate response to the entire population, but it is also necessary that everyone unites to attract more professionals, especially in the field of pediatrics,” he addressed.
The pediatric emergency service has been closed to the outside world since June 1 every night of the week, that is, from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am, due to a shortage of doctors, as explained by the outgoing hospital administration.
“Efforts are made across all services to keep the scales full and the emergency service always open,” he stressed.
