The US Federal Trade Commission (CFC) has filed a complaint against TikTok and ByteDance, a Chinese technology company that partners with the social network. The complaint was reviewed by the Ministry of Justice and concerns a violation of the privacy of children under 13 years of age.
US regulators and a Chinese video app are clashing again. The CFC said the commission’s own investigation “found reason to believe” that both companies were “in violation or near violation of North American law.”
In a statement that quotes BBCA TikTok spokesperson denied the allegations and said the app has been “working with the CFC for over a year to resolve the issues.” [daquela entidade]The representative also admitted that he was disappointed “to continue to pursue legal action.”
In April, the US threatened to ban Tiktok in the country if the Chinese company did not sell the business to US companies. It filed a lawsuit in May accusing Washington of “extraordinary attacks on freedom of expression rights.”
The results of this year’s US presidential election could decide where Tiktok fits into the lives of its 170 million American users.
