Israeli economists urge PM to discuss judiciary

A group of dozens of leading Israeli economic figures wrote a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging him to start negotiations on the government’s proposed judiciary reform and proposed alternative reform options, The Times of Israel reported on February 10.

The letter marks the first concrete alternative offered amid a wave of opposition to the plan, which critics say will undermine Israel’s democracy, economy and security.

“We are very concerned about the proposals to reform the legal system in Israel”said the authors of the letter. “While we believe that changes and improvements are needed in the Israeli legal system, we believe that the proposals put forward by Justice Minister Yariv Levin pose a threat to the system of checks and balances and therefore a threat to democracy. in the state”..

“Based on hundreds of conversations with international investors and companies, we also believe that the changes proposed by Minister Levin will cause irreversible damage to the society, economy and security of the State of Israel, as well as its international reputation.”says the message. “Therefore, we call on the Government of Israel to stop advancing the reform in its current form and stop the legislative process.”.

As Levin put it, the coalition proposals would severely limit the High Court’s ability to overturn laws and government decisions, and the “nullification clause” would allow the Knesset to re-enact laws struck down by a majority of 61 votes, as well as Give the government full control. on the selection of judges, prohibit the court from using the “reasonableness” criteria » to evaluate legislation and government decisions and allow ministers to appoint their own legal advisers.
