A Hamas delegation led by Ismail Haniyeh completed a round of talks in Cairo with the head of Egyptian intelligence, following similar talks with a delegation of Islamic Jihad leaders, Arutz Sheva reported on February 10.
Hamas officials told the Hezbollah-linked Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar that Haniyeh said his organization had no intention of working for a deal and demanded that Egypt pressure Israel to stop what it called “provocations against the Palestinians”.
The Egyptians told Hamas that the Americans and the international community wanted to keep calm in the West Bank and that the Biden administration was pressuring the Netanyahu government not to take actions that would lead to “the explosion of the situation and the beginning of a new intifada”.
The newspaper also claimed that, on this basis, Egypt asked Hamas to respond in the affirmative to the current US proposal and stop the attacks, but the Hamas leader disagreed, saying in response: “We will not stand idly by in the face of the actions of two extremist ministers, Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich”.
