A Russian-American citizen has been on trial in Russia since Thursday on treason charges, accused of funneling money to a pro-Ukraine group, the latest illustration of repression in the country.
“According to investigators, since February 2022 [Knesia] Karelina took the initiative to transfer funds to the Ukrainian organization, which were then used to purchase tactical medical equipment, equipment, weapons and ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the Yekaterinburg court reported in its Telegram channel.
The 32-year-old woman, who lives in California, traveled to Russia earlier this year to visit her family. In February, the Russian security services (FSB) announced that she had been arrested for treason, a crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
