The Philippine Department of Justice and the Federation of Philippine-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry signed a memorandum of understanding to expedite the deportation of Chinese nationals detained in the Philippines, Justice Undersecretary Jesse Andres said in a press conference on the 20th. of June.
As Andrés pointed out, thanks to this agreement “Not only will we be able to decongest our immigration detention centers, but we will also encourage the Filipino-Chinese community to play a more active role in achieving our national goals.”.
In turn, he promised that the country’s Ministry of Justice will ensure full compliance with all procedures and processes for the deportation of Chinese citizens detained in the Philippines. According to the vice minister, there are currently 500 Chinese awaiting deportation in the country’s institutions.
Recall that relations between the Philippines and China worsened after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whose father was overthrown, assumed leadership of the country in 2022. Marcos Sr. then left for the United States, where his son grew up.
The conflict between China and the Philippines over disputed islands in the South China Sea began to gain momentum after the rise to power of Marcos Jr., who became more insistent in demanding control of the islands. The previous head of the country, Rodrigo Duterte, during the five years of his government adopted a position of cooperation with China on the issue of joint development of the disputed territories, pointing out the benefits for the country of such a strategy.
