The Canadian Senate approved a government bill on June 19 aimed at countering foreign interference, The Montreal Gazette writes.
The bill requires registration in the federal register of persons acting in the interests of states and foreign companies. At the same time, covert and fraudulent actions will be criminally sanctioned.
Within the framework of the law, the exchange of confidential information between the State and commercial entities is possible.
The bill has drawn criticism from human rights activists. NGOs fear that innocent people may suffer as a result.
Human rights activists complained that too little time had been allocated to consider the bill: it was introduced in the House of Commons less than seven weeks ago. Social activists claim that the rush in this matter could lead to the emergence of imperfect legislation that violates people’s rights, the newspaper writes.
The bill is currently awaiting royal assent to come into force.
Recall that Western countries harshly criticized the law on foreign agents, approved in Georgia after long discussions. The Russian Foreign Ministry has already noted that a similar law is being adopted in Canada in record time.
