The North Atlantic Council, NATO’s main political decision-making body, will meet next week to decide on the formal appointment of Dutchman Mark Rutte as the organization’s secretary general, diplomatic sources cited by international agencies said today.
Although Rutte’s path to leadership of the Atlantic Alliance was completely open and unhindered this Thursday, after Romanian President Klaus Iohannis withdrew his candidacy, the formal decision must be made by the North Atlantic Council, also known as the Atlantic Council, diplomatic sources said, citing the Spanish agency EFE.
The same sources explained that there is an agreement between the allies for Rutte to replace the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg as NATO leader, but no official decision has yet been made.
