Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is almost certain to become the next NATO leader, as it emerged that Romanian President Klaus Iohannis decided to withdraw his candidacy, the NL Times reported on June 20.
Everyone expects Iohannis to pledge his support for Rutte’s candidacy to lead the military alliance, a role that requires the unanimous support of all its members.
According to the publication, next week Romania will inform NATO allies that Iohannis will inform Rutte about his appointment to this position. The next step will be the formal nomination of Rutte and the vote as Stoltenberg’s successor.
Let us remember that Stoltenberg will officially resign on October 1. Rutte will also have to resign as Prime Minister of the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, new Prime Minister Dick Schoof is expected to take office on July 2, after he takes the oath before King Willem-Alexander.
