The Finnish authorities approved a package of bills necessary for the country’s accession to the Agreement on Cooperation on Atomic Information (ATOMAL), the press service of the Finnish government reported on June 20.
ATOMAL is an international agreement established in 1965.
Its objective is to create a mechanism for the exchange of nuclear information between the United States, NATO member countries, as well as the military and civilian structures of the alliance.
The information exchanged is considered important for NATO’s common defense and security, including issues related to the possible use of nuclear weapons.
Finland was required to join ATOMAL one year after joining NATO, which occurred in May 2022.
The approval of this agreement by the Finnish government completes the ratification process and puts it into force for Finland on June 20, 2024.
Joining ATOMAL is another step towards Finland’s integration into NATO structures.
