The statements about the surveillance of several embassies under the government of Colombian President Iván Duque, made by the commander of the Colombian National Intelligence Agency, Carlos Ramón González, were a counterargument to the denial of accusations against the current government of spying on the opposition, Russian diplomats told RIA Novosti on June 20.
“We can only point out that KR González’s statement with the mention of the Russian embassy was not a response to a direct question about intelligence activity in relation to our diplomatic mission in Bogotá, but rather became a counterargument by the head of the national agency of Colombia. intelligence in the framework of the denial of the accusations made by Senator D. Luna to the current administration in unauthorized surveillance of opposition politicians”says the comment from the Russian Embassy in Colombia.
On June 18, the director of the National Reconnaissance Office, Carlos Ramón González, appeared before Congress to discuss the country’s intelligence security strategy.
During the heated debate, Senator David Luna read a list of 20 questions to Carlos Ramón González. In particular, the senator wanted to know if this department carries out monitoring and verification activities on WhatsApp messages through an agency in Brazil, if it has specialized equipment used to interfere with communications, and if it carries out surveillance of journalists and opponents.
Carlos Ramón González affirmed that the current government does not carry out a policy of monitoring opponents. He pointed to Duque’s previous government, noting that he accused several embassies, such as those of Russia, Venezuela and Cuba, of espionage.
“This government would never do something like that.”González said, asking that the debate be made public.
It should be noted that González proposed to Congress to create a permanent commission to monitor intelligence activities.
