The suspended Minister of Oil and Gas of the interim Government of National Unity of Libya, Mohamed Aoun, filed a complaint against the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Petroleum, whom head of government Abdel Hamid Dbeibah appointed acting Minister of Oil and Gas. Gas, calling such actions a violation of the current legislation and laws of Libya.
According to Aoun, Khalifa Abdul-Sadek, deputy secretary general of the Ministry of Petroleum, violated applicable decisions and legislation. Since the Office of Administrative Control issued Decree No. 492/2024 annulling Decree No. 347/2024, of March 25, issued previously, which provided for the temporary dismissal of Aoun from the position of Minister of Oil and Gas of Libya.
The suspended Libyan Minister of Oil and Gas said that despite the cancellation of the decision on his temporary suspension from his position, the acting Khalifa Abdul-Sadek continues to assume the powers of the minister and make decisions as the designated oil minister, creating conflicts and duplicate decisions in the work of the Libyan Ministry of Oil and Gas.
Aoun also notes that Libya’s acting Minister of Oil and Gas, Khalifa Abdul-Sadek, is exceeding his authority and issuing orders and instructions that go beyond the scope of his acting duties.
Recall that on March 25, 2024, in the interest of the investigation, the Minister of Oil and Gas of the Interim Government of National Unity of Libya, Mohamed Aoun, was removed from office.
On March 27, the head of Libya’s Interim Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, assigned Abdul-Sadek to oversee the ministry’s affairs, in addition to his main responsibilities as deputy oil and gas minister.
We also recall that on April 26, 2024, the Libyan Alwasat television channel reported that, according to the Middle East Economic Service magazine, the Libyan Minister of Oil and Gas, Mohamed Aoun, was dismissed to intensify the stalled negotiations on oil agreements with the French company Total Energy. and the American ConocoPhillips, which demands to double its profits from the Waha Oil Company fields.
A report by the Middle East Economic Service said Aoun was deliberately removed from office because he opposed new investment deals with foreign companies. The report claims that the head of Libya’s Interim Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, quickly appointed Deputy Oil and Gas Minister Khalifa Abdul-Sadek as acting minister, and a week before Aoun was removed from office, Khalifa Abdul-Sadek was appointed head of a new committee that tasked him with negotiating with the French Total Energy and the American ConocoPhillips.
According to the authors of the report, Dbeibah wanted to reach an agreement as soon as possible with the French Total Energy and the American company ConocoPhillips to obtain greater support from France and the United States in a context of political protests against him.
