Recycling will remove about a thousand tons of garbage from the beaches of Mozambique

The Mozambique Association for Recycling (Amor) estimated this Friday that about a thousand tons of various solid waste will be removed from beaches in six municipalities of Mozambique over the next two years and sent for recycling.

“We are going to implement a project for the treatment of solid waste in the municipalities of six municipalities, in the coming years alone we will be able to process about a thousand tons, as a way of combating the degradation of the environment and the marine ecosystem,” said da Amor President Stefan Temperman this Friday, speaking to journalists in Beira.

According to the person in charge, this is a project implemented by Amor with funding from the United Kingdom government and support from the Ocean Risk and Resilience Alliance (ORRAA), which aims to reduce the amount of solid waste on the country’s beaches. generating income for local communities by purchasing this waste in six municipalities in the provinces of Maputo, Sofala, Inhambane and Cabo Delgado, all in coastal areas.

In addition to contributing to the protection of biodiversity and the health of marine species, the project will also raise community awareness about waste management.

“There are several environmental issues that concern us (…) Specifically, we started with these actions when one day I was bothered by some people who once caught shrimp with a lot of garbage. That’s why we need to create the conditions to reverse this. situation through this project and other actions,” Temperman said.

The official added that apart from cleaning the beaches, the initiative will help families who, after weighing, will sell the solid waste collected from these beaches, helping to strengthen the local economy.

Beira Municipal Council spokesman Fernando Mavone said that this is a project that will help clean up the country’s beaches, especially in the province of Sofala, contributing to the reduction of pollution and improving the environment, as well as guaranteeing municipal support for the program.

“The initiative is very good. We are willing to provide some assistance so that we can work in harmony. We hope that together we can improve the environment on our beaches so that people are more aware of an aspect such as environment or cleanliness. The beach is a safe place for all of us,” he concluded.
